The feminist movement has created a story of tenacity, advancement, and the continuous
pursuit of equality in the broad tapestry of political history. Feminism has had a lasting
impact on politics, from the battle cries of suffragettes that resonated through the ages to the current obstacles women face in politics.
With origins in the 19th century, the feminist movement has played a major role in the
global history of political systems. The brave women who led the suffragette movement in
demanding the right to vote are remembered as a significant turning point in the past. We see the beginning of a new era when women assert their legitimate place in politics as the echoes of their struggle continue to ricochet. Feminism is fundamentally a strong proponent of gender equality. It pushes for women's social, political, legal, and economic rights to be equal to those of men across all boundaries. It is an appeal to tear down the obstacles in the way of development and create an environment where everyone has equal access to opportunities regardless of gender.
Despite advancements, there are still obstacles for women in politics, such as low
representation. Feminist movements aim to increase women's representation in legislative bodies and break glass ceilings. One significant issue is the gender pay gap, where women in political positions often earn less than their male counterparts. Addressing this gap is crucial for achieving gender equality and providing equitable compensation for women's contributions to governance and decision-making.
International relations feminist theories break long-held beliefs about gender roles and call
for greater acceptance of the experiences and contributions made by women to global
politics. The goal of reaching gender parity in politics has advanced significantly in several
nations. Only six nations—Rwanda, Cuba, Nicaragua, and others—have 50% or more of
women in their single or lower houses of parliament, according to the Inter-Parliamentary
Union. Based on their progress toward gender parity in political involvement, nations are
ranked in the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report 2023, with Iceland,
Norway, Finland, New Zealand, and Sweden at the top. Bolivia, Mexico, and Nicaragua are
among the other nations that have made progress in encouraging the representation of women in politics. Regretfully, no nation has fully attained gender parity in politics, and in many areas, the road to gender parity is still a long one.
Political parties play a crucial role in advancing women's rights and feminist agendas by
nominating candidates, financing campaigns, mobilizing support, and creating governments.
To ensure diversity and inclusivity, parties must promote women's participation and
incorporate gender equality issues into their policies and programs. Inclusive financing,
structures, procedures, and constitutions can encourage women's representation and
engagement in politics. However, they often perform poorly and create obstacles for women.
To encourage women's participation and representation, parties should establish women's
sections, provide financial support and training for female candidates, establish forums for
policy discussions, and offer incentives to political parties supporting women in politics.
Inclusion and representation are critical in the political sphere. With its emphasis on
political representation, state feminism emerged as a powerful movement. This, in politics, is a dynamic and unstoppable wave that is changing perceptions, challenging conventions, and clearing the path for a day when equality is a goal rather than an ideal.
