Romans as great engineers

Introduction

Ancient civilizations have always been known for their cutting-edge inventions, as well as their revolutionary methods in certain areas. They adapted ways of doing things from one civilization to another, sometimes making adjustments and, thus bringing novelty and modernizing humanity. One such example can be illustrated by the Romans, who made up an empire known for aqueducts, road systems, architecture and many other fields.

Hypocaust

It is widely known that Romans have molded Greek culture into their own. They borrowed architectural styles and incorporated them into their buildings. However, they did not only rely on other cultures for inspiration, but they themselves came up with pioneering inventions. For instance, they developed a heat system named hypocaust, which consisted of a fire made below the floor. This construction was placed in common households, as well as in saunas.

Amphitheaters

Although it has Greek origins, the amphitheater was a  popular place of entertainment among Romans. It represented the space where the gladiators fought. Some historians say that sometimes the amphitheaters would be filled with water to create more suspense among spectators, who would watch the men fight to death.

Aqueducts

In Ancient Rome’s history, the existence of aqueducts was essential. A system of pipes, in which fresh water circulated under the city. The water was used for fountains, toilets and baths. The system reached a number of 11 aqueducts, some of which are still used today.

Road system

Another thing worth mentioning is the Roman road system. It was famous as the well-known proverb says “All roads lead to Rome”. The system comprised highways, bridges and tunnels. Initially it had a military role, but as the time passed the roads helped trading and transporting construction materials.

Apollodorus of Damascus

A renowned architect for Ancient Rome, who lived during Trajan’s reign. He designed Basilica Ulpia, Trajan’s bridge, whose remnants are still visible today in Drobeta Turnu Severin, Romania, Trajan’s forum and Trajan’s column, both located in Rome, the latter presenting scenes from the wars between the Romans and the Dacians.

Impressive constructions

It is widely known that Rome is notorious for its imposing buildings. As you stroll up and down the seven hills of the capital city, you encounter at every turn an eye-catching monument. The Colosseum is one impressive amphitheater, whose façade cannot go unnoticed. Battles between gladiators would take place here, things which represented the main entertainments back then. Another imposing structure is the Pantheon. This building gained its fame not only from its size, but also from its opening through the dome, the oculus. Some say that this served as a sundial, a device meant to measure time, using the light of the sun.

Conclusion

It is indubitable that the Roman Empire shaped humanity in such a vital way, aiding it in making advancements in multiple areas and modernizing it. Seeing and observing the evolution of civilizations, which have changed the world, it is critical to understand how we have adapted and responded to change, as well as how inventions have helped the world move forward as a whole.
