Understanding the Psychology of Procrastination and Overcoming It

Do you know that moment when you have something to do, but you always postpone it? After a few hours, you realise you still have many unfinished tasks, and you're already too tired to do anything. This is called procrastination. It represents an active process in which you choose to do something else, rather than what you have to do.

On the other hand, laziness means refusing to do anything and wasting time doing unimportant stuff, such as watching cat memes or celebrity posts on social media.

We procrastinate when the task seems unimportant or unpleasant. But when this happens often, it leads to reduced productivity and demotivation. Worse consequences might appear, such as depression and even losing your job, in drastic cases.

But there has to be a plausible reason for doing this. If we find a task boring, we will likely postpone it for an undetermined period of time. The problem is that we don’t feel like completing it, because we have already considered that it is not important.

There must be some solutions for procrastination. First of all, you should break your tasks into smaller pieces, with considerable breaks. If you have a lot to do, you will just stress a lot, but if you have smaller, faster tasks, then it will seem easier for you to start working.

Making a plan, or a to-do list can also be useful. In this way, you will understand exactly what you have to do. In fact, planning your life can be quite beneficial, if you procrastinate all the time.

Another example is removing any source of distraction. Putting away your electronic devices and telling your friends that you are busy will convince you that completing your tasks is the best thing you can do at that moment.

All in all, procrastination is an irritating issue, which affects your everyday life. Unfortunately, the main solution for this problem is interrupting any socialization and “hiding” any device existent in your place.
