Why does politics matter?

Whether we want it or not, we will inevitably hear about politics in our lives and some events, be them elections, new laws or other political things, they will keep popping up in the news.

Many people also ask themselves why on earth politics enthusiasts are so passionate about this field they often associate it with boring things, corruption and lying? Well, the answer is quite simple: because this is the way to do anything in a democratic society.

Be it governing a country, building a road, setting tax policy, electing representatives or anything else that regards the running of a country, province or community. All of these things are in a way the result of a political process, be it small (voting on the project for the road in the local council) or big (the government deciding where to allocate the funds).

Every aspect of how a country works is either directly or indirectly a result of a political process. This also applies to a smaller scale to small communities, where they elect a leader or a council of people to make the decisions.

Thus, if you are unsatisfied with your country or city, you will soon find that the people at the top got there through elections and campaigning. Moreover, there are many cases when no action to solve certain issues is taken just because some political factions that are involved in the decision-making process could not find a consensus, thus even if you are not interested in politics, it will still affect you.

And if the political class of a country lets down the people and is taken down through, let’s say a revolution (which is also a political phenomenon), in theory, a new ruling elite will be chosen through elections if that country stays a democracy. So again, political parties and political acts.

No matter how much people might dislike some practices associated with politics or the flaws of different political systems and ideologies, politics in one form or another are unavoidable and if we want them to work for us, not against us we should understand that and see how we can interact with it.
